JO’S Learning Academy K4-3rd Grade

JO’S Learning Academy (JLA) is a K4-3rd grade elementary school conveniently located on the North side of Milwaukee, WI. It’s nestled on the border of the Washington Heights neighborhood along North Avenue. Our complex is unique as it provides child care services for infants, toddlers and school age children in one beautiful location. Before and after care services are provided to families Monday through Friday and summer camp is offered annually. Our program focuses on the whole child starting at 6 weeks through 9 years old. Our future includes grade level expansion over the next few years.

The JLA daily program puts scholars at the forefront as we focus on their basic needs. These include social, emotional, physical, health and academic learning opportunities. At JLA, we meet children where they are and work with them and their families to scaffold learning experiences that help them reach their highest potential. Scholars are taught in small class sizes with enrollment set at no more than 20 per classroom.

JLA staff take time to get to know each child and family as we use culturally responsive teaching strategies to meet their needs.  Our highly qualified teachers plan lessons to personalize learning for each child. Teachers ensure scholars have the skills to progress towards meeting common core state standards.  Our curriculum ensures each scholar learns all academic content in a balanced approach. Each student-centered classroom is equipped with developmentally appropriate materials and equipment. Technology is integrated into the daily curriculum through the use of chrome books, Smart boards, and iPads. Developmentally appropriate assessments are given to accurately measure the growth of scholars to help them meet their grade level expectations.

We pride ourselves on being a family oriented school where scholars learn, grow and develop with us each year. Our passion and care for our scholars shows as we provide nurturing experiences to help them become independent leaders of tomorrow.

Attendance

When scholars are not in school we miss them. Attendance is very important to being successful at JLA. Scholars are expected to be in attendance and ready to learn daily. Teachers take attendance on a daily basis. If your child will not be in school for any reason please contact the school at 414-873-8940. This includes absences for illness, doctor’s appointments, funerals, transportation etc. Please state date, your name, child’s name, relationship to child, reason for absence and a call back number in case needed. If no show/no call your child will be marked as unexcused. Every day matters!

Instruction begins daily at 8:30am. Scholars must be at school on time. Multiple tardies equate to days lost of instruction. If your child is going to be late to school for any reason you must notify us as soon as possible at 414-873-8940. Upon arrival an adult must walk your child to the office and sign in your child. Tardies will also be monitored along with attendance.

Illness

We understand when your child is ill it can create a hardship for working parents. However, it puts other students and staff at risk to send sick students to school. Please keep your child at home if he/she is exhibiting signs of illness such as fever, vomiting, chills, headaches, coughing, etc. If a child is discovered to have any of these symptoms while at school parents will be called to pick up their child as soon as possible. In the area of Covid-19 we will take extra precaution to monitor illnesses as well as follow CDC guidelines. All parents must have a wellness agreement on file.
